A 100% Effective Technique to Clear Your Hips at Impact: How To Turn Successfully

The title of my book is "BREAKTHROUGH IN GOLF - BUILDING A WININING SWING WITH THE HIP TO HIP METHOD"

However, despite preaching body rotation, I personally was having a difficult time making my my hips move the right way,  and turning them fully at age 67, by focusing on my hips.

I re-read Bobby Jone's book.  He said he would load up and turn your hips on his backswing by shifting his weight to his RIGHT HEEL.  And on the downswing, he cleared his hips out at impact by aggressively shifting his weight to his LEFT HEEL.  This simple move forces your hips to turn back and forth fully and effectively most of the time.

Equally effective, and the one which works best for me is simply thinking of rotating my BELLY BUTTON back and forth through the swing.  By turning your belly button past the ball on the downswing and around your left heel, you get the body torso out of the way for the arc of the clubhead to bottom out at the ball for a release of the clubhead right down the line.  Young players move aggressively and almost automatically with their lower body.

It is pure geometry.  The clubhead must bottom out right past the ball to get solid ball compression, and the arc of the clubhead path must not only have the clubface facing down the target line at the split second of impact, but the arc of the club and clubhead must be traveling right down the line as the geometric circle bottoms out.  And it can only happen if the lower body has turned past the ball at impact.  There is no other way to get there!  You can try it by flipping your hands and that will occasionally work, but that is very, very erratic timing from one day to the next.   Hand flipping is not  a reliable method to build a consistent golf swing.

A third method that can work is on the downswing thrusting your left hip out behind yourself at a 45 degree angle away from the ball.  It actually causes the hips to turn out of the way for the clear arc delivery down the line.  But that feel is hard to maintain as a swing key thought.  But, in any event:

You have to open your torso up to the target at impact before your hands get to the impact zone

This is a matter of degrees, so it is critical the torso and hips turn out of the way at impact.

It truly is the secret to a great golf swing.  It is simple to say how to apply, but hard to replicate.  But ONE OF THE ABOVE METHODS SHOULD WORK FOR YOU!  And it does take practice.  In Golf, there are no shortcuts.

Try this and and enjoy how you compress the ball at impact and take your ball striking up a notch!

A BULLET PROOF CURE FOR THE PUTTING YIPS

I have developed a  new anti-yip cure for putting.  I promise you it is foolproof.:

  • Without a golf ball, every night for 3-5 minutes, take your putter stance and just rock your putter very smoothly bank and forth like a pendulum, with slight acceleration in the downstroke, and then,

  • STARE AT THE PUTTERHEAD MOVING BACK AND FORTH, NOT THE FLOOR.  DON’T LET THE PUTTERHEAD DO ANYTHING BUT FLOW SMOOTHLY BACK AND FORTH,  AND DO NOT LET THE PUTTERFACE WOBBLE.

This completely cures any yips, because it solidifies a smooth slightly accelerating stroke into  your muscle memory and subconscious.  You can still line up a putt incorrectly or misread the break, or not have the speed or distance down on a given putt.  But you will never ever again jerk a putt.  I promise.

If you do that drill 2-3 nights a week for 4 weeks, YOU WILL BE CURED.

Try it, and let me know about your results.

Faster Hips or Smarter Starter Hips?

New research is showing that golf swing power is not necessarily boosted by unwinding the hips faster during the downswing, but rather by unwinding the hips in the downswing BEFORE arms complete the backswing.  All the top pros do it, and very few of even scratch tournament amateurs can pull it off.  But of course in Bobby Jone's swing, it is very evident that is what is going on.  There is a good drill called the "washing machine" drill that can build that move into your swing.

McIlroy at the Wells Fargo Champioship

Case example of McIlroy's level of excellence at the Wells Fargo Championship:  On Sunday on hole number 16, Rory hit his drive 364 yards in the middle of the fairway.  He then flushed a wedge 140 yards to about 3 feet from the hole and tapped in his birdie putt on the Par 4, 504 yard hole.  That one hole exemplifies how well he can put his game into a "5th gear" that is not there for the rest of the field and shows why he is so dominant right now when his game is going well.  This should be a very exciting summer!

Greatest Shot Ever

Was the greatest golf shot ever Jack Nicklaus's 1 iron on No. 17 at the 1972 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach or Tom Watson's chip in on the same hole for the U.S. Open title to beat out Jack a few years later?  Or was it Tiger Wood's chip in on No. 16 at the Masters from the back of the green?  Or was it Tiger's 220 yard 6 iron from the trap over a lake to the back of the green (I forgot the hole No.) in the Canadian Open?  Or Gene Sarazen's double eagle at the Masters?

There is some room for debate but those four are, I would assert, in the top 5.  Another one for the level of pure clutch was Tiger Woods career making putt on No. 17 at Medinah in the 1999 PGA to beat out Sergio Garcia.  Lots of folks forget how tough that putt was - 15 breaking right and downhill.  Best clutch putt I have ever seen.  It was comparable to Michael Jordan's shot from the corner as a freshman at UNC when UNC won the NCAA finals against Georgetown.  Career defining.
